General Information
The Sturt Motel is part of the Budget
Motel Chain, and it is located in Broken Hill, 48km east of the South
Australian Border and 1160km west of Sydney.
Broken Hill has a lot to offer visitors, form its rich heritage as one of
Australia’s leading mining towns, to the vast opal plains of White Cliffs
and then up to Broken Hill itself where the view has to be seen to be believed.
Most attractions can be seen in a day, which is ideal for those who are only
able to visit for a short period of time. But for those who wish to stay longer
there is still plenty to see and do.
Things to see
The visitor centre of Broken Hill is an excellent place to start, here you
can pick up maps, travel books, pamphlets, walking tour guides, visitor information
and many, many more helpful hints about how to enjoy your stay in Broken Hill.
Walking down Argent street will yield an array of historical buildings from the 1800’s, including the town hall, post office and Federation-style Technical College. There are also a number of historical hotels. The most impressive of these is the three storey Palace Hotel, built in 1889 it played an important role in Priscilla, Queen of the Desert.
Broken Hill is also home to Australia’s first mosque. It was created in 1981 and is available for inspections on Sundays at 2.30 at Buck and William Street.
There are a number of museums and galleries open to the public, check the visitor’s centre for opening times and locations of all the galleries and museums.
Out and about
There’s nothing quite as exciting as venturing deep underground into
an open cut mine. It is worth having a look at the Day Dream Tourist Mine.
The Day Dream Mine is located about 20km out
of Broken Hill, so it’s an ideal day trip, and is open between 10am
and 3:30pm seven days a week.
After spending all day underground, why not take a photo of Broken Hill from above at Joe Keenan's Lookout. Here you will be greeted with a magnificent view of Broken Hill and information about the town’s rich history.
For more information about any of Broken Hills
attractions, please feel free to speak to Arthur
or Karen and they will be happy
to point you in the right direction.
